What it’s Not
Whimsical style often gets confused with Parisian or Boho Style.
Now don’t get me wrong, stores like Free People or Anthropologie have a lot of similar items and it’s easy to think that it’s all Bohemian. It’s not! In fact, there are pieces in these stores that fit into a lot of different fashion categories. Although similar, allow me to explain their differences:
Why it’s not Parisian
While Parisian style is effortless, it sticks to more neutral tones and elevated pieces. Lots of luxury brands and high end style. Every ting is chic and refined, nothing too oversized or overstated. Whimsical style however, can consist of many bold colors or patterns. Different patterns such as paisley or floral prints are encouraged along with large hats or turbans. You can definitely complement your outfit with luxury items, but it’s not the focus.
Why it’s not Boho
Bohemian is a lifestyle, and the clothes are meant to not hold back. Boho looks can be stylish and chic while at the same time giving the look that you did not put too much thought into what you are wearing. The cut hemmed harem pants, oversized linen shirts, patched dresses, bandanas, mixed metals or wood accessories just work because it’s a way of life. You can be in the garden or be at the Met ; there’s really no difference, again lifestyle.
Boho contrasts with whimsical because unlike an actual lifestyle, when you dress whimsical you are telling a story or being an actual character for that particular time. Traveling, wedding, photoshoot, fashion show etc. A lot of bohemian fashion pieces work for the whimsical style but remember you are dressing with a sense of purpose on purpose. While whimsical can scream liberation, it is also statement fashion, not your everyday bohemian lifestyle look.
Ways To Be Whimsical
Whimsical style can take on multiple different forms. The looks can range from everyday wear, to corporate chic, or fancy engagements. Such style can be incorporated in many different ways using almost any item in your wardrobe. Examples below
