Painting Live With Artist Latrise Sheriff

THE VIBES
For Sheriff painting is not just a spare time hobby. She refers to it as something she needs. Painting has become an outlet and a push forward into her everyday creativity. Experiencing a bit of creative block, Sheriff came up with the idea to paint live in front of friends. She refers to herself as not religious, but spiritual, thriving solely off of pure energy. Thus, the invitation was extended to her “Peeps”, not only family and friends, but also creatives who reciprocate the pure energy she needs, spurring her on to create.
Doing what you love with people you love; what an amazing shock to the soul that can be.
October 1st 2021, Latrise opened her studio doors inviting us into her sacred space to intimately witness her and the paintbrush. Friends were encouraged to bring their drink of choice, and vibe out to her favorite tunes. Dim lighting set the mood, coupled with the soundtrack of Naz, Drake, J.Cole and others. Latrise is a huge “rap head”. A couple of her favorite albums are Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt and Kanye’s College Dropout.
Family and friends enjoyed cocktails mixed with Dussé and Hennessy, and a delicious charcuterie board made by her daughter and a family friend. Sheriff loves to listen to music and “sip on something” as she paints. So with the base bumping, there we were listening to “Her Shitz” (name of her playlist) and drinking cocktails, wine, shots and whatever else we got our hands on as she free-styled on the canvas. It was the perfect mood to see her in her element creating her art.
MEET THE ARTIST
Latrise Sheriff was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. The Windy City artist is by no means new to the art game; she has been creating art for over 20 years. Sheriff is also a Creative Director, Wardrobe Stylist and Studio Owner. Her creative groundwork was laid in Chi-town, where she got her first introduction into the fashion industry and entrepreneurship. As a freestyle artist, she never has a preconcieved concept or knows what she is going to put on the canvas. She says the colors just come to her as she goes. Although she can paint many different styles of art, most of her pieces are African abstract. Her images are complex with hidden meanings that come from inside her head. She draws a lot of her inspiration from different music and whatever she is feeling in the moment. Other artists inspire her creativity as well, some of her favorites being Basquiat and Nina Simone.
HER WORK
Not limited to only the canvas, her work can be found on custom clothing, shoes, wall murals, and more.
